Green Tara embodies the active aspect of compassion. She protects against the eight types of fear. Green Tara is said to deepen wisdom and is invoked for wish fulfillment.

She is also said to have a historical person in the Nepalese and Chinese princess who married the great king Srang-Tsan Gampo. She is credited with introducing Buddhism to Tibet and China.
